As a conveyance of their ongoing support of the Brooklyn Greenway Initiative, Kiwi Energy is pleased to announce that they will be, for the sixth consecutive year, proud sponsors of the organization’s Brooklyn Greenway Half & 5K. Kiwi Energy has been working with the Brooklyn Greenway Initiative for many years and have been contributing to the Brooklyn Greenway Half & 5K specifically since the event’s inception in 2012.

On Sunday, October 14, 2018, runners of all skill levels are encouraged to demonstrate their support of the Brooklyn Greenway Initiative by participating in this year’s Brooklyn Greenway Half & 5K. Brooklyn Greenway Initiative is a non-profit organization whose objective is to develop and maintain the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway.

Participants are certain to have an unforgettable experience. As the only half & 5K held solely on the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway, the Brooklyn Greenway Half & 5K route will guide runners through unparalleled and monumental urban views of Manhattan and Brooklyn. Runners will experience the Brooklyn Waterfront like never before as they run alongside the magnificent views of the midtown and lower Manhattan skylines; Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Williamsburg Bridges; Brooklyn Bridge Park; and the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

The Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway is a 14-mile landscaped route for pedestrians, runners and cyclists which will, when complete, connect neighborhood parks and open spaces from Greenpoint to Bay Ridge. The Brooklyn Greenway Half & 5K is only one of the countless annual initiatives orchestrated by the Brooklyn Greenway Initiative that are driven to help raise awareness and secure funding for the continued development and restoration of the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway.

“The progress that has been made over the years by the Brooklyn Greenway Initiative in improving Brooklyn’s green infrastructure is a great representation of what community-driven change can do. We’re happy to demonstrate our persistent support for such an important organization by sponsoring the Brooklyn Greenway Half & 5K”  – said Richard Booth, President of Retail Operations, Kiwi Energy.

Sustainability is a primary component of Kiwi Energy’s values and is at the core of all that they do. Along with maintaining sustainable business operations, Kiwi Energy applies the same value of sustainability to how it engages with the community as well.  Kiwi Energy seeks to help create a mindful and healthy local community by providing environmentally focused energy solutions and bringing together individuals who value wellness through their contribution to events such as the Brooklyn Greenway Half & 5K.

About Brooklyn Greenway Initiative

BROOKLYN GREENWAY INITIATIVE (BGI) is the 501(c)(3) non-profit organization committed to the development, establishment and long-term stewardship of the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway. When complete, this 14-mile, off-street, landscaped, cycling, running and a pedestrian route will connect 200 acres of regional parks and numerous neighborhood parks and open spaces from Greenpoint to Bay Ridge. Founded in 2004, BGI works with community, non-profit, business, and governmental partners to create and fulfill a comprehensive vision for the Greenway, while at the same time building awareness and support among the 500,000+ residents who live along the route of the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway.

Six miles of the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway that has been completed to date and a 1.7-acre public space, the Naval Cemetery Landscape at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, are actively used by hundreds of thousands of people annually.  The completed Greenway includes one of Brooklyn’s most heavily used bicycle commuter paths along Flushing Avenue. Planning and design are underway for four additional Greenway segments.  New Greenway segments will incorporate design and engineering to support NYC’s goals for coastal resiliency and stormwater mitigation.

BGI hosts numerous volunteer opportunities and public programs throughout the year, including Yoga in the Grove at the Naval Cemetery Landscape and the popular Epic Ride and Brooklyn Greenway Half/5K events along the Greenway. School groups help steward the Naval Cemetery Landscape while learning about urban ecology and horticulture. Corporate groups support BGI and local communities through BGI’s growing Adopt-A-Greenway program.
